Joe Arpaio, who is known for making President Donald Trump’s list as his first Presidential pardon, is definitely not an American favorite, for many reasons.
The main one stems from wrongful imprisonment for two upcoming Arizona journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. Larkin and Lacey’s involvement in the Joe Arpaio’s timeline simply added to Joe Arpaio’s bad reputation with racial profiling of Arizona Hispanic and Latino migrant workers.
Prior to this incident, Arpaio, a 6-year Sheriff for Maricopa County, was well on his way to becoming a household name, but in a very controversial way. Arpaio’s aggressive method for law enforcement against local immigrants won him and his department negative coverage in several publications.
These articles, covered stories like the inmate’s conditions in Arpaio’s “Tent City” jail, as well as his public stance against civil rights of immigrants. Arpaio was no American favorite, and the many articles written about him and his Sheriff’s Department showed America just that.
Cue real-life Superheroes Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, editors for the Village Voice Media Newspaper. Larkin and Lacey’s articles, featured in the Phoenix New Times, consistently covered Arpaio and his controversial methods. Larkin and Lacey’s focus on Arpaio and his Sheriff’s Department helped to gain national notoriety and cast a bigger light onto Arpaio.
This could not have come at a worse time, as Arpaio had been fighting lawsuits and charges against him.
The charges never stopped Arpaio from his unfair practices, as he urged his Sheriff’s department to continue violate and racial profile immigrants in Arizona. Upon Arpaio’s command, Larkin & Lacey were arrested, following the release of yet another article about Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Following a public outcry, both Larkin and Lacey were released. After filing a suit against Arpaio, Larkin and Lacey won the case. They used the funds to form the Frontera Fund, which is an organization which serves to financially assist the civil rights of Hispanic & Latino immigrants.
Who would have given a pardon to someone who had proved to be convicted of such heinous acts, against our beloved First Amendment? Our President, Donald L. Trump.
It’s no secret that former Sheriff Arpaio had long endorsed President Trump, as well as openly supported his views on former President Obama’s birth certificate woes.
The good news is, President Trump’s pardon of Arpaio has not halted the ongoing civil rights movements and support of migrant worker’s free speech in Arizona. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and Jim Larkin | Twitter
Although the Presidential pardon holds enough weight for Arpaio’s racist ways to continue, groups like the Frontera Fund are helping to pave the way to change in Arizona and throughout America.
